Updates……

Hi folks.  The updates on here have been a bit scarce the last couple of weeks and I apologize for that.  Between surplus meetings and grievances, the bargaining surveys and being away a couple of weekends I’ve not had time to do much posting.  I’ll get caught up this weekend with several situations in the local being touched on.  See you then!

Email your MPP now to save ServiceOntario

An important message from President Warren (Smokey) Thomas

I have sent a letter to the Premier, calling on the government to immediately withdraw the section of its budget bill that will privatize ServiceOntario.

ServiceOntario is a huge money-maker for the province. This government operation annually earns $2.7 billion in revenues on $270 million in operating costs. That is a 10-to-1 return on investment! These revenues fund the public services that Ontarians rely on.

We need your help to make this campaign a success.

1. Please share and post my letter on union bulletin boards.

2. E-mail your MPP now. Use this online tool to tell your MPP to keep ServiceOntario public. Encourage your colleagues and friends to do the same.

3. Share the link on Facebook and Twitter.

In solidarity,

Warren (Smokey) Thomas

Bargaining surveys

We will be doing one last collection of bargaining surveys today (Monday) after the noon hour.  Tabulating of results will continue today and Tuesday with the results being shared and discussed at Wednesday’s General Membership Meeting at the MCB.  (start time roughly 5pm).  We will also be electing delegates to attend the Regional Bargaining Conference on June 9th in Belleville.  (Assuming we have enough members to achieve quorum on Weds.)  For those of you who have chosen NOT to fill out a survey, all I can say is you are letting someone else decide what your next contract is going to look like.  It’s that simple.  If you don’t take the opportunity afforded you to speak up, you wishes shall remain silent.  Thanks to all those who have completed the surveys.

Surveys Due Today

This is a reminder that the demand setting surveys are due today (Friday, May 11th).  Please hand them into your local steward.  Please ensure that you have:

  • Listed your Local as “468″
  • Included your classification (eg OAG 04, SO 2, etc)
  • Given your demands (no more than 10 please)

Also this is a reminder that our local Demand Setting Meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday, May 16th at 5pm in the cafeteria of MCB.  We will be voting for delegates, discussing the survey, and other important news.  It is very important that we have quorum and see a wide range of employee groups from our local (Office Admins, Executive Officers, Customer Service Reps, Students, etc).

Below is video from OPSEU corporate discussing the Demand Setting process.

Collective Bargaining surveys

We’ve been advised that the members surveys for our next round of contract talks should arrive Friday morning.  If that does indeed happen, we will do our best to pick them up and distribute them to stewards in the various buildings for distribution to our membership.  Unfortunately, our time lines are extremely short.  With our Local demand set meeting scheduled for May 16th at the MCB cafeteria, we MUST have the surveys back no later than the morning of Friday, May 11th.  The results will then be tabulated and presented at the demand set meeting to be discussed by the members from the various classifications.  It is critical that we have Quorum of 35 members for this meeting.  If we do not, our election of delegates to the regional meetings in Belleville will not be valid and our voice will not be heard.  Those are the rules folks.  We have to follow them.  Once again, please read carefully the surveys and get them back to your steward as quickly as possible.
